Warframe's The New War update is an epos years in the making

It feels like just yesterday Warframe was just that strange short free to play halting with the infinite ninjas. Straight off it's a sprawling sci-fi epic that contains everything from open world mech battles to send off-to-ship quad armed combat. Tomorrow's Warframe update, The Novel War, isn't simply a flare-up of more content, supposed to pad out a service game treadmill with recently chores to swot. IT's a huge floor campaign: the latest chapter in a lavish saga some the solar system protecting Tenno and the return of an old enemy. One that's been a years approach.

"The New War has been the grand vision for years," Rebecca President For, live operations and community managing director, tells Pine Tree State. A Warframe stalwart, Rebecca has been with Digital Extremes for nine years, helping to build and steer its story aboard managing its biotic community. She's even the voice of White lily, the player's guide and wise man. "I preceptor't cerebrate in that respect's been a time since it was proclaimed in 2018 that someone wasn't thinking virtually how to start making information technology awesome, pop out testing it, start building assets, the concepts, everything has been contribution of that."

For anyone who's been playing Warframe, they'll embody no unknown to its flair for story driven self-complacent just The Modern War moves the focus back to the centre. "Last twelvemonth we dropped that barefaced world, Heart of Deimos, it had a floor quest, it moved the story along… story-seeking players were quite bright, simply that's a different flavour from what The New War is. It's full-on, cinematic, active your family relationship to the main characters in the game." It's the genial of content Digital Extremes gets excited to share. "For us, because this is the most personal content we make, we consider it our banner types of easygoing. We put so much into information technology. IT's real a singleplayer campaign, right? You can ascertain how devs react when players reach a certain point in War god or those very narrative [focused] experiences. This is that, for us."

It's too the biggest movement they've done to date. "It's definitely longer than some quest we've of all time done." But players should brace themselves. "The Novel War testament take several hours—devise accordingly, because your normal Warframe activities will non follow available."

The New Warfare as wel has a grander scope than ever before. As new bad bads the Sentients arrive in the solar system, players wish be stepping outside their Tenno shoes and taking control of characters in the factions that undergo previously served As your enemy.

Seeing the universe through the eyes of what has been, for the player, shank fodder should make it a new feel of shell. With properties like Dune ascendant, Warframe feels poised to capitalise on an audience eagre for dense, political world building and rum science fable concepts. However, even though this is a darkening, dramatic cadence in the story, Warframe isn't panic-stricken to have got playfulness. The cloned foot soldier in the Grineer army you check is bossed around by a comically over the top exercise sergeant type officer, patc the down, robot overlooking lad in the hyper laissez-faire economy Principal sum faction is following the instructions of a flippant, individual century corporate overlord, whose disregard is too much to be anything other than laughable. It's this stage of personality that helps Warframe stop away from becoming some someone serious sci-fi game, too controlled with its ain lore. Just as The New War escalates things, it makes plenty of time for the sillier, characterful elements that rich person made the game much a delight.

Though put on't expect to expend whol of The New War in these shoes. "You will certainly be needing a Warframe of choice and your wheeler dealer as the main playable quest content. The system's at war and what we aim to cause with act one of The New War, which is what we showed at TennoCon, fair shows the organisation's perspective on the war, and then IT will immediately become a personal level."

For those invested with in its twists and turns (the quests preceding The New War left players with a lot of personal stakes) this new political campaign is set to be an emotional chapter. "I think the level is going to leave people emotional… I didn't finish the script without instant. It's a very person-to-person solve for us."

This quest is like… the Half-life 3 of Warframe, you eff?

This sounds all good for those already delighted but what about those who've ne'er even tried Warframe? Intimately, IT power just be the best time there's been yet to parachute aboard, as Digital Extremes has free a unused onboarding update. "The goal of that is to make people's journey from the start the game to acquiring to The New State of war way less grindy." Though information technology's no pandurate thing to rebalance the bet on's early share, some aspects weren't so difficult to implement. "Luckily there's a duo of really well-off ways to do it past just reducing the resources required… it's very much a de-grind."

Every last of which is a testament to Digital Extremes maintenance for its community, a responsibility it takes great aid with, but one that isn't always gradual, especially during a global pandemic where your unfit suddenly becomes a line of life for portions of your audience. "IT's been surreal. I myself have got picked a pun and ready-made it my digital therapist for header with lockdown. I know Warframe has become that for much of people. Which comes with its own serial of issues to engage about, because no unmatched's really happy, right now, and we'Re exactly trying to Doctor of Osteopathy our best to not add to the sadness."

So what's the best approach? "We're righteous nerve-racking to exercise caution with everything we do to not make people's days worsened by doing something in Warframe that is a net negative. Sometimes that's a nerf, right? I'm not saying the innovation philosophy is not to nerf during lockdown because people are depressed but it's not a mutually exclusive concept. You need to be sensitive of how the player ignoble are invested in the world you've built and for us that's come with its challenges because we've had few misfires over the course of the pandemic wherein we free a pretty buggy update, or maybe we nerfed something, only we've just taken an approach where we're disagreeable to over-communicate the truth with all our decisions to alleviate any misunderstandings."

All lift in collaboration

The New State of war's arrival represents more than a new story to tell. It's the fruit of a very tough copulate of years for the team. "We've only really gotten in collaboration once this year and that was for TennoCon, for the developer stream crew all included. Thus when IT comes to mold, that was it, and we'Re instantly all remote over again. I wish we were unneurotic because I recollect it would change the… sense that we'Re actually doing this, this is the year, this is the time. Merely we'rhenium making it work unaccessible. There are more challenges outside, that is service line truth, but we're doing what we crapper to get about those challenges."

For Rebekah The New State of war is more than merely the next update. "This request is like… the Incomplete Life 3 of Warframe, you know? Because we've been talking about it for auf wiedersehen and it's finally here. I'm so proud we got to this point disdain all the hardships… I Leslie Townes Hope the great unwashe think it's worth the waitress. More than anything I hope people realise the next year of Warframe is all about what happens after The New War."

And so what is orgasm in Warframe's future? What of the elusive Duviri Paradox, teased endorse in 2019? "It was the weirdest thing we've ever shown. Fans should wait to discover from us on when to set their expectations accordingly. The truth is, now we're about to release The New War, our next update volition atomic number 4 that. There are roughly interesting things going connected, I'm not going to say it's directly connected because The Brand-new War is its own thing but one or two players already saw whatever connections in the trailer at TennoCon. There was a very interesting horse in one of our TennoCon videos… This global is always connected."
